Bege Mato, a 30-year-old ginger supplier resident in Kamaru axis, Kaduna State, has been sentenced to six months in jail by an Upper Customary Court sitting in Kafanchan, Kaduna State.
Mato, who converted for personal use, part of the money paid by one of his customers for the supply of ginger was charged with criminal breach of trust and cheating.
Inspector Esther Bishen, the police prosecutor told the court that the complainant, Julius Jonah, who resides in Bakin Kogi, had on July 25 reported at the Kafanchan Divisional Police station that he entrusted the defendant with N795,000 to supply him with ginger but the defendant only supplied N535,000 worth of ginger and converted the remaining N260,000 for his personal use.
The police prosecutor said that the offences contravened sections 296 and 306 of the Kaduna State Penal Code Law.
When the charges were read to the defendant, he pleaded guilty and begged the court for leniency.
Following the defendants plea while delivering judgement on Thursday, Justice George Gwani, sentenced the defendant accordingly.
On the first count, the justice Gwani sentenced the convict to three months in prison, with an option to pay a fine of N15,000.
On the second count, the presiding judge sentenced the convict to six months in prison, with an option to pay a fine of N25,000.
The Judge however said both sentences are to run concurrently but ordered the convict to pay the complainant a compensation of N260,000.
