A 24-year-old Furera Abubakar has been apprehended by the Bauchi State Police Command over claims of killing her four-day-old stepchild in Bantu village, Ningi Local Government Area.
This was made known in a statement released on Tuesday in Bauchi by the command’s spokesperson, SP Ahmed Wakil.
He stated that the suspect was detained by officers for alleged homicide.
SP Wakil said when the Ningi Divisional Police headquarters was informed about the incident on August 19, the baby, born on August 15, and was just four days old, was killed by Furera on August 19, just before the baby’s naming ceremony.
According to initial investigations, the suspect is the nursing mother’s co-wife.
The suspect went into her co-wife’s room and applied liquid pesticide on the umbilical cord of the newborn who hadn’t yet healed.
The baby’s health deteriorated, and he died due to the liquid that was thought to contain toxic substances.
The spokesperson assured the public that after the investigation was completed, the suspect would be charged to court.
