The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has refuted reports suggesting that it has commenced a scheme of arbitrary promotions, following recent accelerated promotions granted to a select group of officers. The Force described such claims as false, misleading, and designed to undermine its integrity and professionalism.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, August 7, 2025, by the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the NPF noted with concern the surge in lobbying and unofficial requests being directed at the Inspector-General of Police and the Police Service Commission by officers seeking similar elevation.
The Force clarified that the recently approved accelerated promotions were granted strictly to officers who met established criteria, including outstanding service, professional excellence, uncommon bravery, and unwavering commitment to duty.
“These accelerated promotions were not arbitrary but part of a well-structured reward system established by the police leadership,” the statement emphasized. “The officers who benefitted were those who met the standardized guidelines for such elevation.”
The NPF specifically cautioned the public to disregard what it described as “misleading reports sponsored by a particular online platform,” which implied that the Force had launched a blanket or indiscriminate promotion exercise.
“These reports are baseless and intended to mislead the public and cast aspersions on the credibility of the Police promotion process. The Nigeria Police Force remains committed to transparency, merit, and due process in all personnel decisions,” the statement read.
DCP Adejobi further warned officers against attempting to influence their promotion through unofficial channels, saying such behaviour is unethical, violates the principles of meritocracy, and will be met with disciplinary sanctions in line with existing laws.
Reiterating its dedication to honour, professionalism, and integrity, the Police urged its officers and men to remain focused, disciplined, and committed to their constitutional duties.
“The Nigeria Police Force stands firmly on a promotion system anchored on verifiable merit, discipline, and honourable service to the nation,” the statement concluded.
