FG cancels 65th Independence Day parade

The Federal Government has called off the parade ceremony scheduled for Nigeria’s 65th Independence Day, October 1, 2025.

The announcement was made on Monday in a statement from Segun Imohiosen, Director of Information & Public Relations for the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.

While no specific reason was given for the cancellation, the government emphasized that the decision does not lessen the importance of the milestone. The statement clarified that all other programs planned for the anniversary will proceed as scheduled.

“The cancellation is in no way a diminishment of the significance of this milestone anniversary, and the government remains committed to celebrating Nigeria’s 65th year of independence with dignity and enthusiasm,” the statement read.

The government expressed regret for any inconvenience caused by the last-minute change.

The announcement also called on Nigerians and the diplomatic community to support the reform agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, urging collective effort “in making Nigeria a greater nation.”

The parade was a key part of the celebrations under the theme, “Nigeria @ 65: All Hands on Deck for a Greater Nation.” Despite the cancellation, October 1st remains a public holiday.
