Political earthquake: Gov Diri, Bayelsa lawmakers, dump PDP

In a move that signals a major political realignment, Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, has resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), dealing a significant blow to the main opposition party.

Governor Diri announced his resignation on Wednesday at the executive chamber of the Bayelsa State Government House.

The defection is not an isolated event. The Speaker of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Abraham Ngobere, along with 18 other PDP lawmakers, also tendered their resignations from the party, effectively causing the collapse of the PDP’s structure in the state.

This development comes just 24 hours after the Governor of Enugu State, Peter Mbah, defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), suggesting a coordinated exodus of PDP governors.

As of the time of filing this report, Governor Diri has not yet officially declared his next political move, though the mass resignation of his allies strongly indicates a planned move to the APC.

The PDP has now lost four governors to the APC this year alone. With the departure of Governors Diri and Mbah, the opposition party is left with only eight governors, drastically reducing its influence and foothold across the country.

The development was confirmed by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Daniel Alabrah, in a post on his verified social media handle.
