Multiple truck collisions on Lagos-Ibadan expressway claim eight lives, cause chaos

A series of devastating truck collisions on the Kara Bridge has plunged a key section of the Lagos-Ibadan expressway into chaos, resulting in eight confirmed fatalities and a massive traffic gridlock.

The multiple accidents, which occurred inward Mowe, Ogun state, have created a scene of “bedlam,” with the resulting blockage affecting not only the main expressway but also adjoining routes.

A Cascade of Carnage

According to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the incident was not a single crash but a chain of separate, severe collisions involving heavy-duty vehicles. The details paint a picture of a catastrophic traffic event:

. Fire and Flames: A truck and a container-laden trailer collided and burst into flames.
· Spilled Cargo: Another truck, loaded with cartons of biscuits, overturned, scattering its contents across the roadway.
· Bridge Collapse: In a particularly dramatic incident, a separate container-laden trailer crashed through the bridge’s barrier, with its carrier detaching and falling into the river below, effectively blocking the entire road.

In a statement released on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday, LASTMA confirmed the grim toll: “8 casualties recorded.” The agency reported that recovery and evacuation efforts are “on top gear” to clear the wreckage and restore traffic flow. Officers and other emergency first responders are currently on the scene managing the situation.

A Dangerous Pattern on Lagos Highways

This tragedy follows another serious collision just a day earlier on the Otedola Bridge, inward Berger. In that incident, a contest for right-of-way between a 14-tyre truck and a smaller delivery truck led to a violent impact, causing significant damage and severely injuring one of the drivers.

The back-to-back incidents have raised urgent concerns about road safety and the conduct of heavy-duty vehicles on the busy corridors connecting Lagos to other major regions.
