Awujale succession: Ijebu group warns Sanwo-Olu against interference

A pan-Ijebu socio-political group, Ijebu Parapo, has cautioned Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, against what it described as interference in the process leading to the emergence of the new Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland.

In a statement issued on Sunday in Ijebu-Ode and signed by its Chairman, Otunba Olumuyiwa Sonowo, the group expressed displeasure over the governor’s alleged involvement in the traditional selection process, insisting that due process should be allowed to prevail.

According to the group, it initially refrained from commenting on the matter in the hope that “reason would prevail,” but decided to speak out over what it termed “unwholesome activities” allegedly linked to the Lagos State governor.

Ijebu Parapo accused Governor Sanwo-Olu of attempting to impose a preferred candidate, Abimbola Onabanjo, on the people of Ijebuland, alleging that members of the council of kingmakers were approached and influenced to support a particular choice.

The group questioned the propriety of a governor intervening in the traditional affairs of another state, asking whether Sanwo-Olu would tolerate similar interference in Lagos State, especially in matters concerning traditional institutions.

It urged the governor to focus on the administration of Lagos State and refrain from actions it described as meddlesome in the internal affairs of Ijebuland.

Ijebu Parapo further warned that failure by the governor to withdraw from the process could lead to mobilisation of Ijebu traditional worshippers to protest in Lagos State, a move it said would mirror the disruption it believes is being caused in Ijebuland.
