US lawmaker warns against Nigeria’s break-up, says Christians will suffer most

United States Congressman Riley M. Moore has dismissed claims that the US supports any attempt to break up Nigeria, warning that separatist agitations would worsen insecurity and place Christian communities at greater risk.

Moore made this known in a statement posted on his verified X (formerly Twitter) account after a visit to Nigeria, where he met with government officials, church leaders, aid organisations, and internally displaced persons to assess the security situation.

According to him, discussions during his engagements did not include any serious consideration of dividing Nigeria. He cautioned that encouraging separatist movements would further endanger Christians, particularly in the North and Middle Belt.

The congressman also warned that a weakened or destabilised Nigeria would have consequences beyond its borders, noting that it would embolden terrorist groups and undermine security across the continent.

Moore reaffirmed his commitment to advocating for victims of terrorism and insecurity in Nigeria, stressing that his concern extends to all Nigerians affected by violence.

He further linked his position to ongoing US–Nigeria security cooperation, describing the recently signed security agreement between both countries as a significant step toward addressing violence and strengthening bilateral relations.
