Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has endorsed his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, as his preferred successor ahead of the 2027 governorship election.

Speaking on Monday after a consultative meeting at the State House, Sanwo-Olu described Hamzat as competent, experienced, and well-prepared to lead the state. According to the governor, the deputy governor had formally declared his intention to contest and was accompanied by a high-level delegation comprising party leaders, cabinet members, former senators, ministers, and diplomats.

Sanwo-Olu said the meeting reflected broad-based support for Hamzat’s ambition, noting that stakeholders present unanimously endorsed his candidacy after extensive deliberations.

“We just concluded a visit where the deputy governor came with a strong delegation to formally inform me of his intention,” the governor said, adding that the engagement was cordial and productive.

Describing Hamzat as a seasoned administrator, Sanwo-Olu commended his deep understanding of governance, pointing out that he has played a key role in shaping policies and programmes since the inception of the administration.

“He is a man who understands governance deeply and has been part of the system, knowing how every aspect functions,” he said. “He has worked with me with humility and at the highest level of integrity, loyalty, commitment and support.”

The governor also expressed appreciation for the formal notification, describing it as a sign of respect within their political relationship.

He further acknowledged the influence of President Bola Tinubu in their political journey, noting that their partnership had long been envisioned and nurtured.

Sanwo-Olu expressed confidence in Hamzat’s chances at the polls and urged Lagos residents to support his aspiration in the interest of continuity and sustained development in the state.
