APC strengthens grip with five by-election victories across states

The All Progressives Congress (APC) recorded a dominant performance in the by-elections conducted across Nigeria on Saturday, winning five of the six senatorial, federal constituency and state assembly contests declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) secured the only non-APC victory, retaining the Rivers South-East Senatorial District seat.

INEC announced the results after the conclusion of voting and collation exercises across the affected states.

Enugu North Senatorial District

In Enugu State, Asogwa Ikeje Israel of the APC was declared winner of the Enugu North Senatorial District by-election.

The APC candidate polled 162,360 votes to defeat candidates of other parties.

Results:

  • APC – 162,360 votes
  • NDC – 3,129 votes
  • ADC – 1,676 votes
  • LP – 1,027 votes

Nasarawa North Senatorial District

Danladi Envulu-Anza of the APC won the Nasarawa North Senatorial District by-election conducted to fill the vacancy created by the death of former senator Godiya Akwashiki.

The result was announced at the College of Education, Akwanga, by the Returning Officer, Prof. Aminu Ali.

Results:

  • APC (Danladi Envulu-Anza) – 45,362 votes
  • LP (Labaran Maku) – 12,931 votes
  • PDP (David Ombugadu) – 11,570 votes
  • ADC (Alaku Ahmed) – 4,244 votes
  • NDC (Duba Dodo) – 1,496 votes
  • NNPP (John Araneshri) – 102 votes

Ondo South Senatorial District

APC candidate Dayo Faduyile emerged victorious in the Ondo South Senatorial District by-election, which was held across the six local government areas in the district.

The result was announced in Okitipupa by the Returning Officer, Prof. Gbenga Solomon-Ibileye, Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University Lokoja.

Results:

  • APC (Dayo Faduyile) – 68,474 votes
  • APM (Adeolu Akinwunmi) – 1,411 votes
  • APP (Adesanya Olaoluwa) – 213 votes
  • BP (Clement Funso-Nejo) – 70 votes

The by-election was conducted following the appointment of former senator Jimoh Ibrahim as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations.

Rivers South-East Senatorial District

The PDP retained the Rivers South-East Senatorial seat as its candidate, Olaka Nwogu, defeated contenders from three other political parties.

INEC Returning Officer Rosemary Ogu announced the result on Sunday.

Results:

  • PDP (Olaka Nwogu) – 47,961 votes
  • APC (Osarosaka Ebenezer) – 1,647 votes
  • AA (Beke Fabeke) – 1,175 votes
  • LP (Sam Bariboa) – 367 votes

The election was held to fill the vacancy created by the death of Senator Barinada Mpigi.

Dawakin Kudu/Warawa Federal Constituency, Kano State

Rabiu Shuaibu of the APC won the by-election for the Dawakin Kudu/Warawa Federal Constituency seat in Kano State.

Announcing the result, Returning Officer Prof. Umar Sani declared that the APC candidate had satisfied all legal requirements and was duly elected.

Results:

  • APC (Rabiu Shuaibu) – 35,356 votes
  • APM (Lawal Haruna) – 268 votes
  • LP (Abubakar Muhammad) – 98 votes

Declaring the outcome, Sani said: “That Rabiu Shuaibu of APC, having satisfied the requirements of the law, is hereby declared the winner and returned elected.”

Zuru State Constituency, Kebbi State

In Kebbi State, Rabiu Aiki of the APC won the Zuru State Constituency by-election and will represent the constituency in the State House of Assembly.

Results:

  • APC (Rabiu Aiki) – 4,871 votes
  • LP (Aliyu Muhammad) – 168 votes

INEC disclosed that 109,385 voters were registered for the election. A total of 5,156 voters were accredited, while 5,055 votes were recorded as valid. The commission said 95 votes were rejected, bringing the total votes cast to 5,150.

With the outcome of the six by-elections, the APC strengthened its electoral presence by securing five seats, while the PDP maintained its hold on the Rivers South-East Senatorial District.
