‘Bring your widow’s mite’: Yesufu launches fundraising drive for Obi

Aisha Yesufu, activist and supporter of Peter Obi, has appealed to Nigerians to contribute financially towards funding the former Anambra governor’s 2027 presidential campaign.

In a video shared on X on Wednesday, Yesufu said Obi could not be expected to shoulder the financial burden of the campaign alone, urging supporters to take collective responsibility for mobilising resources.

She said Nigerians who wanted to reclaim the country must demonstrate their commitment by contributing whatever they could afford.

“There is no way we can say that we want to rescue a nation, we want to get back our nation, we want the people to own this nation, and then we say that we are going to leave everything to Mr Peter Obi to fund,” she said.

Yesufu recalled that Obi was initially reluctant to embrace public fundraising ahead of the 2023 presidential election but said she had persuaded him that allowing citizens to contribute would give them a greater sense of ownership and involvement.

According to her, the previous fundraising exercise was accounted for, with details of the funds made available to the public.

She, however, said the arrangement under which Obi largely financed campaign activities was no longer sustainable, insisting that supporters must contribute their widow’s mite towards the 2027 project.

The activist clarified that the fundraising initiative was separate from the official fundraising arrangements of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Obi’s political platform.

She said the party would publish its own account details for those interested in making donations directly to it, while the account she was promoting would be dedicated to citizen-funded activities in support of Obi’s campaign.

Yesufu also pledged transparency in the management of the contributions, promising to account for every donation received, as she said she did during the 2023 election.
