Ronaldo quits Portugal after explosive row with coach

Cristiano Ronaldo has reportedly called time on his international career following a bitter disagreement with Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus.

The 41-year-old superstar’s decision comes after tensions reportedly erupted during Portugal’s last international engagement, when he was left out of the team that defeated Norway 2-1 in the Nations League.

Ronaldo was said to be particularly unhappy after allegedly being promised a substitute appearance. He reportedly began warming up in anticipation of coming on, only for Jesus to change his mind.

The incident triggered a heated confrontation between the two, with Ronaldo accusing the coach of going back on his word.

His frustration was also evident after the final whistle against Norway, as he reportedly went straight to the dressing room without joining his teammates in acknowledging supporters who had travelled to Oslo.

The Portuguese football authorities subsequently handed him a suspension from international duty and imposed a fine following the controversy.

Ronaldo departs the national team as Portugal’s record goalscorer, having registered 146 goals in 232 appearances.

His international career also includes the historic triumph at the 2016 European Championship, when he captained Portugal to its first major international title.

His reported retirement brings an end to one of the most remarkable international careers in football history.
