ADC slams Tinubu over alleged suppression of opposition

The Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), David Mark, has openly challenged President Bola Tinubu, questioning what he described as moves against opposition parties despite the ruling party’s dominant political position.

Speaking at a press conference in Abuja on Thursday, Mark expressed concern over Nigeria’s democratic climate, noting that the All Progressives Congress (APC) currently controls a large majority of the National Assembly and over 30 state governments.

He questioned the rationale behind actions he believes could weaken political competition, asking why a government confident in its performance would fear a free, fair, and transparent electoral process.

Mark also raised doubts about the President’s democratic credentials, accusing the administration of attempting to sideline opposition parties.

His remarks follow a decision by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to remove him and Rauf Aregbesola as national chairman and secretary of the ADC, citing a Court of Appeal ruling tied to the party’s internal leadership dispute.

The development has sparked ongoing reactions across Nigeria’s political landscape, with concerns growing over the implications for multiparty democracy.
