Anambra shuts Nnewi market for one week over sit-at-home

The Anambra State Government has ordered the temporary closure of the New Auto Spare Parts Association (NASPA) Market at Nkwo Nnewi over continued compliance with the Monday sit-at-home directive in the state.

The market was shut from midnight on Monday, February 23, 2026, and is scheduled to reopen on March 2, according to a public service announcement issued by the Commissioner for Information, Law Mefor.

Authorities said the action followed traders’ failure to comply with an earlier directive by Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo mandating the resumption of normal business and social activities on Mondays across the state.

The closure was conveyed on behalf of the governor by the Special Adviser on Trade and Markets, Chief Evarist Uba, alongside the Special Adviser on Security, AVM Ben Chiobi (retd), and the Mayor of Nnewi, Hon. Echezona Anazodo.

The government advised traders and customers to stay away from the market during the one-week shutdown to avoid enforcement actions by security agencies. It also warned that stricter measures, including extended closure, could follow if compliance remains unsatisfactory after reopening.

State officials noted that most parts of Anambra have resumed regular Monday activities since the governor’s late January directive aimed at ending the sit-at-home practice.
