Army appoints first female acting director of public relations

In a historic move, the Nigerian Army has appointed Lieutenant Colonel Onyinyechi Anele as the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, marking a major milestone as the first woman to hold the position.

Anele will officially take over from Major General Onyema Nwachukwu on April 22.

About the New Appointee
Lieutenant Colonel Anele brings a wealth of experience to her new role, having previously served as:

  • Public Relations Officer: Office of the Chief of Army Staff
  • Department of Civil-Military Relations: Defence Headquarters, where she distinguished herself in various strategic communication roles

Anele’s Credentials

  • Member of Direct Regular Course 15: Demonstrating her military expertise and training
  • Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR): Showcase her proficiency in public relations

Succession Details
Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, who has been the army’s spokesperson for over three years, will be redeployed to the Nigerian Army Heritage and Future Centre.

Nwachukwu was appointed in June 2021 following a major reshuffling in the military.
