Security was heightened around the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court in Maitama on Wednesday as Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central Senatorial District, appeared for arraignment on a three-count charge.
The charges, filed by federal prosecutors, accuse the senator of making false allegations with the intent to harm the reputation of the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio. The alleged statements are said to constitute criminal imputation and defamation against a public officer.
Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, who arrived at the court alongside her husband, is being tried for allegedly making assassination-related claims deemed injurious to Akpabio’s person and office.
Court proceedings are currently underway amid tight security.
