Charlie Kirk assassination suspect identified as Utah varsity student Tyler Robinson

Authorities have identified Tyler Robinson, a 22-year-old Utah State University student, as the suspect in the assassination of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk.

Robinson, who lived with his family in a $600,000 home in Washington, Utah, was taken into custody late Thursday after a manhunt that lasted more than a day and a half. Law enforcement officials confirmed he will face the death penalty if convicted.

According to reports, Robinson confessed to his father, Matt Robinson, a 27-year veteran of the Washington County Sheriff’s Department. His father then alerted authorities and secured his son until law enforcement arrived. His mother, Amber Robinson, works for a state-contracted agency supporting disabled individuals.

Family social media posts depict Robinson as a bright student who earned a scholarship to Utah State, frequently appearing in cheerful vacation photos and celebrating academic achievements. However, past images also show him in a Donald Trump costume and handling firearms during his youth.

Charlie Kirk, 31, was assassinated on Wednesday while speaking at a Turning Point USA event on the Utah Valley University campus in Orem. Surveillance footage captured the shooter fleeing after firing a single bullet from approximately 200 yards away. Kirk, a prominent MAGA figure and founder of Turning Point USA, was rushed to the hospital but died from his injuries.

Kirk leaves behind his wife, Erika Frantzve, and two young children—a three-year-old daughter and a 16-month-old son. President Donald Trump led tributes, calling Kirk “The Great, and even Legendary,” while ordering U.S. flags to be flown at half-staff until Sunday evening.

Authorities are still investigating Robinson’s motive.
