A Chinese national featured in a widely circulated video showing Nigeria Police Force (NPF) officers lining up to receive N5,000 cash has clarified the reasons behind the action.

The individual, who identified himself as the leader of the delegation, stated that the handouts were a token of appreciation for the police officers’ professionalism.

“A Kind Gesture, Not a Bribe”
The Chinese national explained that the cash handout was a common tradition in Chinese culture to show appreciation for people who do their jobs well.

He emphasized that no money was offered or demanded inappropriately and that the gesture was made in “good faith.”

The video sparked widespread condemnation on social media, with many Nigerians describing the incident as shameful. Omoyele Sowore, a presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, criticized the police officers, stating that they were reduced to accepting bribes due to their “greed and indiscipline.”
