The Federal High Court in Abuja has reversed its earlier order that nullified any actions taken by the Senate during Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s pending suit.
The suit challenges her suspension by the Senates over allegations of misconduct.
On March 4, Justice Obiora Egwuatu had granted Akpoti-Uduaghan’s motion, barring the parties from taking further action against her while the suit was pending.
However, the Senate went ahead to suspend her for six months, effective March 6.
At Wednesday’s proceedings, counsel for the Senate, Chikaosolu Ojukwu (SAN) argued that the earlier order was vague and ambiguous, and that it prohibited the Senate from exercising its constitutional powers to make laws.
Justice Egwuatu agreed, stating that setting aside the order would not prejudice Akpoti-Uduaghan’s case.
The court has fixed March 25, 2025, for the hearing of all applications. Akpoti-Uduaghan’s suspension has sparked mixed reactions, with some lawmakers arguing that the penalties are excessive and could set a dangerous precedent for stifling dissent within the Senate.
