Electricity supply may worsen as gas firms warn of shutdown over ₦6trn debt

Nigeria’s power situation may deteriorate further as gas suppliers threaten to halt supply to thermal power plants over mounting debts owed by power generation companies (GenCos).

A source at the National Control Centre in Oshogbo disclosed this on Thursday, warning that the development could significantly affect electricity generation across the country.

The warning comes amid worsening power distribution nationwide over the past four weeks, with households and businesses already complaining about persistent outages and reduced supply.

Data from distribution companies (DisCos) show that the total electricity allocated nationwide has remained significantly low.

As of March 9, 2026, at 10:38 a.m., power distribution stood at:

  • AbujaDisCo – 516 MW
  • IkejaDisCo – 510 MW
  • EkoDisCo – 436 MW
  • IbadanDisCo – 322 MW
  • BeninDisCo – 218 MW
  • EnuguDisCo – 209 MW
  • Port Harcourt DisCo – 188 MW
  • KanoDisCo – 182 MW
  • KadunaDisCo – 170 MW
  • JosDisCo – 152 MW
  • YolaDisCo – 81 MW

Total – 2,984 MW

By March 11, 2026, at 9:04 a.m., distribution slightly improved but remained far below previous levels:

  • AbujaDisCo – 577 MW
  • IkejaDisCo – 570 MW
  • EkoDisCo – 487 MW
  • IbadanDisCo – 360 MW
  • BeninDisCo – 244 MW
  • EnuguDisCo – 233 MW
  • Port Harcourt DisCo – 210 MW
  • KanoDisCo – 203 MW
  • KadunaDisCo – 190 MW
  • JosDisCo – 170 MW
  • YolaDisCo – 90 MW

Total – 3,334 MW

Industry sources say the current supply level is roughly half of what was distributed nationwide about a month ago.

The situation has been further compounded by rising temperatures across the country, with intense heat both during the day and at night increasing electricity demand among households and businesses.

Meanwhile, the federal government had earlier promised to clear debts owed to generating companies. The GenCos say they are owed about ₦6 trillion in accumulated debts over the past decade, a development that continues to threaten the stability of the country’s power sector.
