The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Barrister Nyesom Wike, has ordered a full-scale cleanup of Abuja and its satellite towns, targeting street beggars, traders, “one-chance” syndicates, scavengers, miscreants, and other social nuisances disrupting the peace and security of the nation’s capital.
According to a statement issued on Wednesday by the Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media to the Minister, Lere Olayinka, the operation—code-named “Operation Sweep Abuja”—has already commenced across the territory.
The statement reads:
“In line with the Abuja Environmental Protection Act and other relevant laws, the FCT Minister, Barrister Nyesom Wike, has directed the immediate evacuation of miscreants, street beggars/traders, scavengers, and other criminal elements from the FCT.
“Our nation’s capital should be a secured symbol of pride and beauty—not a haven for street begging, loitering, or criminal activity. Many of these individuals are known to act as informants or accomplices to criminal syndicates.
“To ensure the success of the operation, a Joint Task Force comprising security agencies and relevant FCT Secretariats, Departments, and Agencies (SDAs) has been mobilized to identify, apprehend, and evacuate those violating the order. All apprehended persons will be profiled and handed over to their respective state governments for appropriate rehabilitation or reintegration.
“The security of lives and properties in the FCT is of paramount importance to the government, and we urge all residents to support this effort for a safer and cleaner Abuja.”
