FG declares Tinubu International Airport alternative to Abuja airport

The Federal Government has declared the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Airport in Minna, Niger State, as an alternative to the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja.

Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, made the announcement during the inaugural commercial flight at the airport.

Reason Behind the Decision
The decision was based on the airport’s standard facilities, including its runway, and its close proximity to Abuja.

Keyamo expressed surprise that the airport had remained underutilized despite being equipped with all necessary international facilities.

Benefits for Passengers
With this declaration, flights will be redirected to Minna in cases of operational disruptions or poor weather in Abuja. This move aims to enhance the overall aviation experience for passengers and provide a more efficient travel option.

Governor’s Commitment to Aviation Development
Niger State Governor, Mohammed Bago, attributed the milestone achievement to collective effort and pledged to maintain the partnership between the state government and Overland Airways. He also announced plans to carry out projects around the airport to showcase his administration’s commitment to aviation development.

Airport’s History and Revival
The Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Airport was originally commissioned in 1990 but had fallen into disuse due to a damaged runway and lack of infrastructure.

After a comprehensive rehabilitation led by the Bago administration, the airport was officially commissioned by President Bola Tinubu in March 2024.

New Developments
The airport features a dedicated Hajj terminal, easing logistics for pilgrims. Additionally, the state government has partnered with Family Homes Nigeria to build housing units for aviation workers near the airport.
