The federal government thought the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has rolled out the second phase of its contactless biometric passport application system to four countries: the United States, Mexico, Jamaica, and Brazil.
This innovative system allows Nigerians abroad to renew their passports without visiting a physical passport centre for biometrics capturing.
Key Features of the Contactless System
- Digital Application: Applicants can submit passport applications digitally, eliminating the need for physical interactions.
- Secure Data Handling: The system ensures secure data handling, quick verification, and smooth processing.
- Mobile App: Applicants can renew their passports by downloading the NIS mobile app on the Google Play Store, with the Apple Store version coming soon.
- Biometric Enrollment: The system allows for contactless biometric enrollment, making the process more convenient and efficient.¹ ²
Rollout Phases
- Phase 1: The system was initially launched in Canada on November 1, 2024, and later extended to the UK, USA, and Italy on November 15, 2024.
- Phase 2: The second phase includes the United States, Mexico, Jamaica, and Brazil, with the system launched in the US on Friday and in Mexico, Jamaica, and Brazil on Monday.
- Phase 3: Nigeria and Australia will mark the third phase of the rollout, with a future date to be announced.
