FG extends contactless passport application system to US, Brazil, others

The federal government thought the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has rolled out the second phase of its contactless biometric passport application system to four countries: the United States, Mexico, Jamaica, and Brazil.

This innovative system allows Nigerians abroad to renew their passports without visiting a physical passport centre for biometrics capturing.

Key Features of the Contactless System

  • Digital Application: Applicants can submit passport applications digitally, eliminating the need for physical interactions.
  • Secure Data Handling: The system ensures secure data handling, quick verification, and smooth processing.
  • Mobile App: Applicants can renew their passports by downloading the NIS mobile app on the Google Play Store, with the Apple Store version coming soon.
  • Biometric Enrollment: The system allows for contactless biometric enrollment, making the process more convenient and efficient.¹ ²

Rollout Phases

  • Phase 1: The system was initially launched in Canada on November 1, 2024, and later extended to the UK, USA, and Italy on November 15, 2024.
  • Phase 2: The second phase includes the United States, Mexico, Jamaica, and Brazil, with the system launched in the US on Friday and in Mexico, Jamaica, and Brazil on Monday.
  • Phase 3: Nigeria and Australia will mark the third phase of the rollout, with a future date to be announced.
