FG responds to US, UAE visa policy changes, reaffirms diplomatic commitment

The Federal Government of Nigeria has responded to recent adjustments in visa issuance policies by the United States and the United Arab Emirates, reaffirming its commitment to strong diplomatic ties with both nations.

In a statement released from the State House and signed by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, the government acknowledged the changes made by the two countries, particularly those affecting Nigerian citizens, and assured the public that it is actively engaging the relevant authorities to address the situation.

According to the statement, the U.S. government officially communicated that its policy shift was driven by two main factors: the high rate of visa overstays by Nigerian nationals and the need for more reliable access to identity records. The changes, the U.S. said, are part of its global visa reciprocity review, which could affect the number of entries allowed and the validity of issued visas.

In response, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed all federal agencies to ensure strict compliance with Nigeria’s international obligations. He also emphasized the need to bolster inter-governmental cooperation, particularly in verifying the identities of Nigerians seeking consular services abroad.

“The President calls on all Nigerians to respect the immigration regulations of their host countries and to uphold the integrity of the permits and privileges granted to them,” the statement read.

On the issue of UAE transit visas, the Federal Government noted that it has not received any official notice regarding a revised visa policy. However, it observed that the process of visa issuance for Nigerians appears to be resuming in a “gradual and orderly manner.”

President Tinubu expressed appreciation for the ongoing cooperation from the UAE government, describing its posture as constructive and engaged. He assured Nigerians that any concerns raised by foreign partners would be addressed through appropriate diplomatic channels.

The President reiterated his administration’s commitment to safeguarding the dignity of Nigerians abroad and ensuring they can travel, work, and live in any part of the world with respect. He emphasized that this remains a key priority under his administration’s 4-D Foreign Policy agenda, particularly its focus on the Nigerian diaspora.

The statement concluded with a strong reaffirmation of Nigeria’s intent to deepen its long-standing bilateral relations with both the United States and the United Arab Emirates.
