FG screens nominees for ambassadorial appointments

The Federal Government has initiated the screening process for candidates nominated for diplomatic roles to fill vacant positions in 76 embassies and 22 high commissions worldwide.

This move aims to address the void in diplomatic leadership at various foreign missions, which has raised concerns among foreign officials and stakeholders.

Screened Nominees
The following individuals have been screened for ambassadorial appointments²:

  • Former South-Eastern Governors: Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi and Okezie Ikpeazu
  • Politicians: Shehu Sani, who recently joined the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC)
  • Former Presidential Aide: Reno Omokri
  • Former Deputy Governor of Lagos State: Femi Pedro
  • Former Minister of Aviation: Femi Fani-Kayode
  • Founder of Guaranty Trust Bank: Fola Adeola

Background Checks and Screening Process
Nominees have been asked to report to the DSS offices nearest to them for security checks and provide personal education and work history. Background checks are being conducted on the nominees, with information shared with relevant agencies within the presidency and legislature.

Delay in Appointing Ambassadors
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, attributed the delay in appointing ambassadors to a lack of funds. However, with the ongoing screening exercise, the Federal Government may soon announce the names of the new diplomats and their portfolios.

Recall of Nigerian Ambassadors
In September 2023, President Bola Tinubu recalled all Nigerian ambassadors, both career and non-career. Nearly two years after their recall, the presidency announced that their replacements would be announced “very soon”.
