Tragedy struck the Dorayi Chiranchi Quarters of Kano metropolis on Friday, January 17, 2026, when assailants attacked a family residence, killing a woman and her six children.
The Kano State Police Command confirmed that the victims were Fatima Abubakar, 35, and her children—Maimuna (17), Aisha (16), Bashir (13), Abubakar (10), Faruk (7), and 18-month-old Abdussalam. The attack occurred at the home of their husband and father, Haruna Bashir.
According to the police, a distress call was received at about 12:10 p.m., reporting that hoodlums had forcefully entered the house and assaulted the occupants with dangerous weapons. Officers were immediately deployed to the scene by the Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, who led the response through the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, DCP Lawal Isah Mani.
The victims were evacuated to Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital, Kano, where they were confirmed dead. The Criminal Investigation Department (CID), led by ACP Wada Jarma, has commenced a full investigation to identify and prosecute those responsible.
While the attackers were initially described as unknown hoodlums, police sources later indicated that arrests have been made, with investigations continuing to establish the circumstances and motives behind the attack.
The police command expressed condolences to the bereaved family, residents of Dorayi Chiranchi, and the people of Kano State, assuring the public that justice will be pursued.
The incident has sparked widespread shock and grief across the community, with residents and local leaders calling for swift justice and enhanced security to prevent similar tragedies.
