The Imo State Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education has announced new policies affecting both public and private schools across the state.
In a circular dated August 8, 2025, the ministry stated that graduation ceremonies and parties will now only be permitted for Primary 6 pupils and Senior Secondary School 3 (SSS3) students, in line with Nigeria’s 6-3-3-4 education system.
Graduation events for kindergarten, nursery, and Junior Secondary School 3 (JSS3) students have been abolished. The ministry explained that the decision was taken to refocus schools, parents, and stakeholders on the academic achievements of pupils at the end of their primary and senior secondary education cycles.
On textbook usage, the state directed proprietors of both faith-based and private schools to strictly adhere to the list of approved textbooks. The books, according to the ministry, are to remain in use for four years to promote stability, reduce financial burden on parents, and allow younger children to reuse the textbooks of their older siblings.
The ministry reaffirmed its commitment to providing quality and functional education to all students in the state.
