Jailbreak: 12 inmates escape from Kogi prison, raising concerns of internal compromise

A prison break occurred at the Federal Correctional Centre in Kotonkarfe, Kogi State, in the early hours of Monday, with at least 12 inmates escaping.

Unlike previous incidents, where gunmen facilitated the escape, this break seemed to occur seamlessly, with inmates escaping through the tower.

The Kogi State government has confirmed the incident and urged the Federal Government to investigate.

State Commissioner for Information and Communication, Mr. Kingsley Fanwo, described the incident as “unfortunate” and assured citizens that the government is taking decisive steps to prevent a recurrence.

Fanwo raised concerns about possible internal compromise, citing the lack of structural damage to the tower.

He stated that a thorough investigation is necessary to determine the circumstances of the escape, arrest the fleeing inmates, and identify potential saboteurs within the system.

Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo has directed the State Security Adviser to collaborate with the Federal Correctional Centre and other security agencies to prevent future security breaches. The state government has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting federal security agencies through logistics and resources.

Fanwo commended the swift response of security agencies and urged residents to remain vigilant, reporting any suspicious individuals in their communities. He warned that anyone found harbouring an escaped inmate would be held accountable.

The government has assured residents that the situation is under control, and there is no cause for panic. Citizens are encouraged to go about their daily activities as normal, knowing that the security of lives and property remains the top priority.
