Kanu declines to open defence, says no valid charges against him

The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has told a Federal High Court in Abuja that he will no longer open his defence in the ongoing terrorism trial against him, insisting that there are no valid charges to answer.

Kanu, who had earlier expressed his intention to call witnesses and had filed a request for witness summons, announced a change of plan when the case resumed on Monday.

Addressing the court, Kanu stated that after carefully reviewing the case file and the evidence presented by the prosecution, he found no legitimate charges linking him to terrorism. He maintained that continuing with a defence would be unnecessary since, according to him, the prosecution had failed to establish any case against him.

In response, Justice James Omotosho directed Kanu to submit a written statement outlining his position and to serve a copy on the prosecution. The judge also advised him to seek counsel from criminal law experts on the implications of his decision.

Justice Omotosho subsequently adjourned the case to November 4th, 5th, and 6th for the adoption of final written addresses, after which the court will decide whether Kanu has a case to answer.
