The Lagos State Government has revealed that 116 foreign nationals applied for Nigerian citizenship or special immigrant status between May 2024 and May 2025. This initiative aims to integrate eligible foreigners who have legally resided in the state, aligning with the national goal of assimilating law-abiding non-Nigerians and promoting investment.
Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for Nigerian citizenship, applicants must:
- Legally Reside in Nigeria: Foreigners must have lived in Nigeria for at least 15 years.
- Maintain a Clean Record: Applicants should have a good standing with no adverse records.
- Show Demonstrable Investment Interest: Foreigners must demonstrate investment interest in Nigeria.
Application Process
The application process involves:
- Screening for Eligibility: A total of 63 applicants were screened for eligibility out of 116 applications received.
- Vetting Process: A sub-committee comprising representatives from key agencies reviews each application.
- Final Approval: The Federal Ministry of Interior makes the final approval after a comprehensive vetting process.
Special Immigrant Status
The state also offers special immigrant status, granting permanent residency to:
- Foreign Nationals Married to Nigerian Citizens: Once all legal requirements are fulfilled, foreign nationals married to Nigerian citizens can obtain permanent residency.
