Caleb Mutfwang has defended his decision to use an armoured personnel carrier during his visit to Angwan Rukuba in Jos North following a deadly attack, saying the situation was misrepresented on social media.
The governor visited the community after suspected bandits killed about 28 people and injured several others. His arrival, accompanied by heavy security and an armoured vehicle, sparked widespread reactions online.
Speaking on Channels Television, Mutfwang clarified that his actions were guided by security advice rather than fear. He explained that he had rushed back from Abuja after learning of the attack and was informed that residents refused to allow evacuation of victims’ bodies until he arrived.
According to him, security operatives assessed the environment as potentially hostile and insisted on protective measures. Despite this, he said he was determined to be at the scene.
Mutfwang added that standing through the vehicle’s roof hatch was simply to gain visibility and effectively address the crowd. He noted that he spent most of his time interacting directly with residents, appealing for calm.
He criticised the selective circulation of video clips online, saying they failed to capture the full context of his visit. The governor maintained that he felt safe among the people, while acknowledging that security personnel had a duty to act based on their assessment.
