NCAA cracks down on airlines over travel restrictions

The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has warned airlines operating in Nigeria to stop selling tickets to passengers without informing them about potential travel restrictions at their destination. The NCAA has received several complaints about passengers being deported or denied entry due to visa or travel restrictions, causing significant distress and tarnishing the image of Nigeria’s aviation industry.

According to the NCAA, it is the responsibility of airlines to notify passengers about any potential barriers to their admissibility at their destination before they commence their travel.¹ The agency has advised all international airlines operating in Nigeria that they will no longer tolerate such practices.

New Regulations:

  • Airlines must inform passengers about potential admissibility issues or travel restrictions in advance of their departure.
  • Airlines must take appropriate measures to screen and provide passengers with accurate, up-to-date information regarding their travel documents and visa requirements before issuing a ticket.

Consequences for Non-Compliance:

  • Fines
  • Suspension of flying operations
  • Other regulatory actions considered appropriate

The NCAA anticipates that all airlines will work together to protect the professionalism and integrity of the aviation sector and guarantee the safety of Nigerian travelers.
