NDLEA uncovers cocaine smuggling scheme hidden in fila, gele

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has revealed a sophisticated drug trafficking operation involving cocaine cleverly concealed within traditional ceremonial wear, specifically caps (‘fila’) and headgears (‘gele’) often associated with ‘aso-ebi’ attire.

The alarming discovery was reported by NDLEA spokesperson Femi Babafemi via his official X (formerly Twitter) account on Sunday. He shared images and a video of the intercepted items and cautioned Nigerians to exercise caution when asked to transport clothing items abroad for others.

“In case you’re asked to help take as part of your luggage to Europe or elsewhere any aso-ebi fila and gele (traditional male cap and female headgear), the latest seizure of cocaine concealed in such materials uncovered by #ndlea_nigeria will make you think twice,” Babafemi advised.

This recent bust is part of a larger series of significant discoveries by the agency, including the interception of an oil tanker modified with a hidden compartment specifically designed for drug smuggling across the nation.
