A large group of youth leaders from the Niger Delta region launched a protest at the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) Limited Towers in Abuja early Wednesday morning, starting around 6 am.
The demonstrators effectively blocked both the entrance and exit gates of the company, leading to significant traffic disruptions along Herbert Macaulay Way in the Central Business District.
Reports indicate that the protesters carried banners emblazoned with bold inscriptions, voicing their demand for the resignation of NNPC’s Group Chief Executive Officer, Bashir Ojulari. They accused him of corruption and mismanagement and called for the appointment of a Niger Delta indigene to assume the leadership position.
The protest attracted the attention of security agents, including personnel from the Nigeria Police Force, who were present to manage the situation and facilitate traffic diversion. As a result of the protest, many workers were forced to park their vehicles far from the gates of the NNPC Towers.
The demonstration highlights ongoing concerns regarding regional representation in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector, as the youth leaders continue to advocate for accountability and change in leadership within the NNPC.
