Nigeria is actively engaging with U.S. authorities to review the newly announced non-immigrant and non-diplomatic visa policy that affects Nigerian travelers. Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu disclosed these developments following a constructive meeting at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs with U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria, H.E. Richard Mills, and his delegation.
The U.S. Department of State recently updated its reciprocal non-immigrant visa policy, which will take effect on July 8, 2025. Under the new guidelines, most non-immigrant and non-diplomatic visas issued to Nigerian citizens will be classified as single-entry visas with a limited validity period of three months. However, visas that were issued before this date will retain their original status and validity.
In response, the Nigerian government, through relevant ministries and agencies, is working closely with the U.S. mission to address the criteria that led to the revision of the policy. Key issues under consideration include:
– Secure Travel Documents: Ensuring that countries issue secure travel documents with verified traveler identities.
– Visa Overstay Management: Implementing measures to limit the occurrence of overstays by travelers holding U.S. visas.
– Information Sharing: Facilitating the exchange of relevant security and criminal record information to enhance public safety.
The United States has reiterated its commitment to the longstanding relationship with Nigeria, emphasizing the importance of mutual respect, shared security priorities, and economic collaboration.
Ambassador Odumegwu-Ojukwu noted that Nigerian security and immigration agencies have been diligently working to meet international best practice standards, recognizing that visa reciprocity is an ongoing process that is subject to review and change.
In the interim, Nigerian travelers are urged to adhere strictly to the terms of their visas and ensure that their travel documents are authentic, accurate, and current. The Nigerian government continues to intensify efforts aimed at facilitating revisions to the new visa policy for the benefit of its citizens.
