Nigeria evacuates citizens from Iran to Armenia amid escalating conflict

The Federal Government has commenced the evacuation of Nigerians stranded in Iran to neighbouring Armenia as tensions intensify in the Middle East.

The development was confirmed by the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), which said officials of the Nigerian Embassy in Iran coordinated the safe movement of willing citizens across the Armenian border.

The evacuation followed escalating hostilities involving Iran, the United States, and Israel.

Although NiDCOM did not disclose the exact number of evacuees, the commission assured that no Nigerian has been reported injured or killed in the ongoing conflict.

Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of NiDCOM, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, said government officials were stationed at the border to receive Nigerians leaving the troubled country.

“So far, no Nigerian in Iran has been affected by the war, as government officials remain at the border to receive all who want to leave,” she said.

According to the commission, embassy officials in Iran facilitated the evacuation to provide safe passage for Nigerians who opted to relocate following waves of attacks on the country.

Meanwhile, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, reaffirmed the country’s commitment to constructive engagement within the Commonwealth of Nations.

Tuggar made the remarks during the 26th Commonwealth Foreign Affairs Ministers’ Meeting held at Lancaster House in London.

In a statement by the Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesperson, Dimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, the meeting reviewed pressing global challenges and sought stronger cooperation among member states ahead of the upcoming Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM).

Discussions also emphasised the need for collective action to promote peace, economic resilience, and democratic governance across the Commonwealth.
