NiHSA warns of imminent flooding as Rivers Niger, Benue reach peak levels

As water levels rise with the ongoing rains, the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NiHSA) has issued a fresh warning that Rivers Niger and Benue have reached their peak, posing serious flooding risks to surrounding communities.

In a statement on Thursday, NiHSA Director-General, Muhammad Umar, urged residents of flood-prone areas to take immediate precautions and evacuate where necessary.

“Rivers Niger and Benue have reached peak level, thereby posing threats of flooding to surrounding areas. Communities along these rivers should take proactive steps to safeguard their lives and property,” Umar said.

He explained that tributaries such as Rivers Rima, Kaduna, and Gongola have also peaked, while several major dams are experiencing surges in reservoir levels.

Kainji Dam is currently spilling excess water, putting Kainji town, Patigi, New Bussa, Borgu, and Mokwa at risk.

Jebba Dam is also spilling, threatening communities in Kwara and Kogi States including Jebba town, Gungu, Fanga, Bere, and Baro.

Goronyo Dam in Sokoto State has filled to maximum capacity and is spilling at its peak, flooding Goronyo, Wamako, Shinaka Yerimawa, Kurukuru, and nearby settlements.

Kiri Dam in Adamawa State is spilling, submerging communities such as Kiri, Tallum, Banjiram, Purokayo-Lakumna, and Shelleng.

Zungeru Dam is not currently spilling but has seen rising reservoir levels.

Umar added that while Cameroon’s Lagdo Dam has not begun releasing water, torrential rainfall and heavy runoff in its catchment have triggered flooding in Adamawa State, particularly in Yola North and South, Girei, and Numan.

He noted that the agency is working closely with dam authorities to mitigate risks and appealed for urgent action to prevent loss of lives and property.
