The NLNG Science Quiz Competition witnessed an exhilarating finale on Saturday, showcasing the brilliance and scientific talents of students from eight schools across Rivers State. Community Secondary School, Igboh Etche, emerged as the champion, outperforming seven other contenders in a fiercely competitive event centered around the theme “Renewable Energy Solutions.”
Held in Port Harcourt, Rivers state, this year’s competition aimed to identify and celebrate the top science students in the senior secondary category. Over the course of a rigorous three-phase contest—comprising the Championship, a Science Project Exhibition, and the Grand Finale—Community Secondary School, Igboh Etche, distinguished itself with its accuracy, composure, and profound understanding of clean energy concepts.
The Science Project Exhibition featured innovative projects, with Oginigba Comprehensive Secondary School, Oginigba, claiming the top spot. Bonny National Grammar School (Senior) followed in second, while Community Secondary School, Kira Tai, secured third place.
In the Senior Secondary 1 (SS1) category, the competition reached a conclusion at the Championship stage, with Birabi Memorial Grammar School, Bori, Khana, taking first place. Niger Delta Science School, Obio/Akpor, and Government Secondary School, Abua, followed closely in second and third positions, respectively, in a tightly contested field of young scholars.
The remaining finalists included Government Secondary School, Eneka (4th), Niger Delta Science School, Obio/Akpor (5th), Nigerian Navy Secondary School, Port Harcourt (6th), Birabi Memorial Grammar School, Bori, Khana (7th), and Government Secondary School, Abua (8th).
At the event’s finale, Sophia Horsfall, General Manager of External Relations and Sustainable Development at NLNG, highlighted the company’s dedication to promoting scientific excellence and sustainability. “The world is moving fast toward cleaner, greener energy. NLNG is proud to lead this shift by exporting LNG, a cleaner fossil fuel, and supplying LPG to Nigerian homes. This quiz is an investment in education and an inspiration for the scientists, engineers, and innovators of tomorrow,” she stated.
Dr. Azibaolanari Uzoma-Nwogu, Permanent Secretary of the Rivers State Ministry of Education, represented by Tam Job Inisefiekabo, emphasized the relevance of the competition’s theme amid global challenges such as climate change and energy insecurity. Dr. Peters Nwagor, Chairman of the Rivers State Chapter of the Science Teachers Association of Nigeria (STAN), also underscored the necessity of equipping youth with critical knowledge and skills for future innovation.
Since its inception in 2008, and following its relaunch in 2020, the NLNG Science Quiz Competition has continually evolved. The introduction of the Science Projects Fair a year ago has provided students with a platform to present practical solutions to pressing scientific and environmental challenges, thereby deepening their engagement with STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics).
Organised in collaboration with the Rivers State Ministry of Education, the Science Teachers Association of Nigeria (Rivers State Chapter), and Dragnet Solutions Limited, the quiz competition has become a hallmark of excellence in science education in the region.
