In a critical security operation, a notorious bandit identified as Yahaya Zango was apprehended at the Hajj Camp in Abuja while attempting to disguise himself as a pilgrim preparing for the annual pilgrimage to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Zango, who has long been on the radar of security agencies due to his alleged involvement in various acts of banditry and kidnapping across northern Nigeria, was intercepted during a routine screening of intending pilgrims.
According to a reliable source, the apprehension occurred after credible intelligence prompted enhanced surveillance at the camp. Zango was caught while trying to board a bus destined for the airport alongside unsuspecting pilgrims. “Upon close monitoring and verification, the suspect’s identity was uncovered, and he was taken into custody without incident,” the source disclosed. Zango is currently undergoing interrogation as authorities aim to uncover more about his network and criminal activities.
In a related development, credible sources have reported that at least four other individuals with suspected ties to banditry are on the list to travel for the 2025 Hajj through the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja. Among those named are Madele, reportedly the father of notorious bandit kingpin Ado Aliero; Bello Bazamfare; and a woman who is believed to be the mother of another infamous bandit leader, Gwaska Dankarami. Notably, one of these individuals is said to be a sibling of Ado Aliero himself, raising further concerns about the infiltration of criminal elements into the pilgrimage process.
The apprehension of Zango comes on the heels of similar concerns raised during the 2024 pilgrimage, when 14 suspected bandits were reportedly sponsored to travel to Saudi Arabia for Hajj. Upon their return, three were apprehended, while one was controversially released under ambiguous circumstances, prompting widespread criticism.
In light of these recurring incidents, security agencies have ramped up screenings and intelligence operations around this year’s pilgrimage, prioritizing the integrity of the Hajj process and ensuring the safety of all pilgrims. Security officials are committed to preventing a recurrence of previous issues, reiterating their determination to maintain peace and security during this sacred religious event.
