Plateau residents protest against ‘surge’ in killings, kidnappings

Residents of Jos, the Plateau state capital, have staged a protest against the recent surge in kidnappings and killings by gunmen in the state.

The march, led by Christian leaders, including Polycarp Lubo, Plateau chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), aimed to demand an end to the violence.

Demands for Justice and Peace
The protesters carried placards with messages such as “Stop the killings,” “Every life matters,” and “Let Plateau live.”

The demonstration followed a series of violent attacks in Plateau, resulting in over 100 deaths in Bokkos and Bassa LGAs within the past two weeks.

Call for Unity Against Violence
A faction of CAN in the 19 northern states has demanded justice for victims and an end to the “senseless” killings.

The group’s chairman, Yakubu Pam, emphasized the need for stakeholders, including traditional rulers, religious leaders, and security operatives, to unite against the cycle of violence.

Government Response
President Bola Tinubu has asked the Plateau governor to address the underlying issues connected to the killings. The governor has announced measures to prevent further violence, including a ban on night grazing and restrictions on motorcycle use and cattle transportation.
