Police debunk viral terror alert in Abuja, arrest suspect

The Nigeria Police Force has dismissed as false a viral video alleging an ongoing terrorist attack in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, describing the claim as misleading and malicious.

In a statement issued on Friday, the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Okon Placid, said there was no such incident in the nation’s capital, urging the public to disregard the video.

According to the police, preliminary investigations revealed that the footage was deliberately manipulated using content sourced from online platforms to create a false narrative capable of causing panic and undermining public confidence in security agencies.

The police further disclosed that a suspect, identified as Pam Joseph, has been arrested in connection with the creation and dissemination of the video. The arrest, the statement noted, followed credible intelligence and digital forensic investigations linking the individual to the origin and spread of the false content.

The Force подчеркнула that while citizens have the right to freedom of expression, such rights do not extend to spreading misinformation that could threaten public peace and national security.

It therefore advised members of the public to always verify information before sharing and to avoid actions that could incite fear or disorder.

The suspect is currently in police custody and will be charged in court upon the conclusion of investigations.

The Nigeria Police Force reiterated its commitment to maintaining public order and national security, adding that it will continue to monitor digital platforms and take decisive action against purveyors of false information.
