Renewed violence rocks Anguwan Rukuba in Jos after curfew

Tension returned to Anguwan Rukuba in Jos North, Plateau State, on Wednesday as violent clashes left several residents dead and others critically injured. The outbreak followed the partial lifting of a 48-hour curfew imposed after Sunday’s deadly attack by suspected gunmen in military uniforms.

Under Governor Caleb Mutfwang’s directive, the curfew now runs from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., allowing limited civilian movement while security forces remain present.

Eyewitnesses reported that angry youths armed with sticks, machetes, and other weapons attacked residents at the Anguwan Rukuba junction near UNA Primary School. Stones were thrown into homes, forcing families to flee.

The army was deployed to contain the violence, but at least one victim, Alkasim Umar, later died in hospital. Community leaders criticized the state government, claiming the curfew was relaxed without adequate security arrangements.

Videos circulating on social media showed residents being assaulted in broad daylight. The renewed clashes are linked to Sunday’s earlier attack, when gunmen stormed the community, firing indiscriminately in the market.

Calls are intensifying for sustained military and police presence, with residents urging state and federal authorities to intervene to prevent further bloodshed.
