Terrorists on Thursday launched a coordinated attack on a military base in Benisheikh, Borno State, killing an unspecified number of Nigerian soldiers.
In a statement, Michael Onoja, director of defence media operations at the Defence Headquarters (DHQ), said the attack occurred around 12:30 am. He noted that troops under the command of Brigadier-General Oseni Braimah repelled the assault with “exceptional courage, professionalism, and superior firepower,” forcing the attackers to retreat.
Onoja described the incident as a sign of desperation by terrorist groups following recent losses, adding that troops of Operation HADIN KAI remain combat-ready and effective in securing the North-East.
He confirmed that some soldiers lost their lives during the encounter, describing them as gallant personnel who paid the supreme price in the line of duty. The Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, commended their sacrifice and extended condolences to their families.
The DHQ urged the public to disregard unverified reports, including claims that a brigadier-general was killed, noting that no further details would be released until families of the fallen are officially notified.
Ongoing clearance operations are underway to track fleeing insurgents and prevent regrouping. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
