Tragedy struck at Kogi State University (KSU), Anyigba, as a senior lecturer in the Faculty of Education, Dr. Olabode Abimbola Ibikunle, was found dead in a hotel room under controversial circumstances involving a 200-level student.
Dr. Ibikunle, described by students as one of the strictest lecturers in the institution, reportedly checked into the hotel three days ago with a female student alleged to be from the Department of Social Studies Education. Eyewitnesses and unofficial sources claim the student is an Ebira indigene and widely known for her looks.
Reports allege that Dr. Ibikunle, a married man with children, consumed multiple energy drinks prior to the encounter. Sources said the initial phase of the encounter went smoothly, but the lecturer reportedly collapsed and died as the second round was about to begin.
The student, whose identity has been withheld, is currently in police custody. According to preliminary investigations, she claimed she had no idea what led to the lecturer’s sudden death. However, law enforcement authorities are treating the case as suspicious and are not ruling out the possibility of poisoning or other foul play.
The Kogi State Police Command has confirmed an investigation is underway and an autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death.
Meanwhile, news of Dr. Ibikunle’s death has sparked mixed reactions on social media, especially among KSU students. Some have taken to various platforms to mock the late lecturer, using memes and captions to ridicule the incident — a reflection of his unpopular reputation among students.
As the investigation continues, university authorities have yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident.
