Viral video: Police acts swiftly on extortion allegations along Benin bypass

In response to the circulation of a viral video depicting police officers engaged in extortion along the Benin bypass, the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has taken decisive action to address the incident. The Force is reaffirming its commitment to its zero-tolerance policy on extortion and unprofessional conduct within its ranks.

The incident prompted the immediate mobilization of the six implicated officers, including a Chief Superintendent of Police overseeing the group, who were summoned to the Force Headquarters to face the Inspector-General of Police, Dr. Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun. In a stern rebuke, IGP Egbetokun described the officers’ actions as “shameful, distasteful, and utterly unacceptable.” He emphasized the need for strict disciplinary action, ordering the initiation of proceedings against all six officers involved.

As part of the response, the officers have been formally queried, and orderly room trials are currently underway for the inspectors featured in the incriminating video. This swift response exemplifies the NPF’s dedication to maintaining professionalism, integrity, and accountability within the force.

The public has been reassured that misconduct of this nature will not be tolerated and that appropriate sanctions will be enforced in accordance with established disciplinary procedures. The Nigeria Police Force continues to strive for a respectful and ethical policing environment.
