In a grand presidential reception, President Bola Tinubu conferred national honors on all 24 players and the 11-member technical team of Nigeria’s senior women’s national football team, the Super Falcons, following their historic victory at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.
Each player and technical crew member was awarded the title of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) and will receive one three-bedroom apartment as part of the government’s Renewed Hope Housing Scheme. Additionally, a cash award of the naira equivalent of $100,000 was approved for each player, while technical team members will receive $50,000 each.
“You have inspired millions, especially young girls who now see proof that their dreams are valid and achievable,” President Tinubu said, celebrating the team’s remarkable achievement. He recalled the emotional highs and lows of the final match, emphasizing how their triumph united the country in joy.
The President pledged his administration’s continued support for sports development and youth talent nurturing, underscoring that the Super Falcons represent hope for Nigeria’s future. In recognition of their achievement, the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum announced a donation of ₦10 million to each team member.
First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu praised the Super Falcons as role models and highlighted their journey as a powerful testament to resilience and teamwork. Captain Rasheedat Ajibade expressed gratitude on behalf of her teammates, reinforcing the significance of their victory as an inspiration to young girls across Nigeria.
The Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko, reinforced the theme of national unity, attributing the team’s success to the government’s emphasis on sports and women’s empowerment. He noted that this triumph symbolizes more than just a win in football; it embodies the spirit and togetherness of Nigeria.
