2027: Patience Jonathan throws weight behind Tinubu, says ‘It’s turn by turn’

Former First Lady Dame Patience Jonathan has firmly rejected the idea of returning to Aso Rock Villa, instead pledging her support for First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu in the lead-up to the 2027 general elections.

Speaking during the presentation of the Women Icon Leader of the Year award by Accolade Dynamics Limited in Abuja, Jonathan emphasized the importance of rotational leadership, dubbing the “turn-by-turn” model crucial for fostering national unity.

Acknowledging the President’s daughter, Folashade Tinubu-Ojo, Jonathan expressed her long-standing relationship with Senator Oluremi Tinubu, highlighting their shared history of collaboration dating back to their time in public office. She recounted the support she and her husband received from the Tinubu family during their 2011 presidential campaign, reinforcing their deep-rooted friendship.

Rejecting any desire to reclaim her former role, Jonathan stated, “I’m not denying her [Oluremi Tinubu]. I’m not running. I’m not going back to the villa.” Instead, she emphasized her commitment to campaigning alongside the First Lady, stating, “I stand by my friend. My friend is great.”

Jonathan also voiced strong support for affirmative action, advocating for a 35 percent quota for women in governance, while lamenting the ongoing rejection of gender equality legislation by the National Assembly. She called on male lawmakers to recognize the critical role women play in society and governance.

As she accepted the prestigious award, Jonathan dedicated it to the collective efforts of those advocating for women’s health and economic empowerment, including her own NGOs—Aurora Richard Foundation and Women for Change and Development Initiative. In her remarks, she celebrated the collaboration and shared commitment needed to uplift women in Nigeria.

The event, attended by notable figures, was a tribute to those who have significantly impacted leadership and community development in Nigeria and beyond, as highlighted by Ms. Dofan Chizaram, Managing Director and CEO of Accolade Dynamics. Jonathan’s remarks reflect a renewed focus on unity and support as Nigeria prepares for the upcoming elections.
