PDP convention in Ibadan explodes in drama as Wike, Fayose, Anyanwu are expelled

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Saturday expelled the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike; former Ekiti State governor, Ayodele Fayose; and former National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu.

The expulsion motion was moved by Chief Olabode George, former National Vice Chairman (South), during the party’s convention in Ibadan, Oyo State. It was seconded by Bauchi State PDP Chairman, Hon. Samaila Burga.

This decision comes after intense internal battles, including attempts by the Wike-aligned faction to halt the convention through the courts. However, an Oyo State High Court ruling cleared the way for the event to proceed.

In the days leading up to the convention, the faction loyal to Wike escalated its resistance. Mao Ohuabunwa, Chairman of the Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Wike-led group, dismissed the Ibadan gathering entirely, insisting it had no legal standing.

He warned that anyone travelling to Ibadan for the convention was merely “going to relax,” deriding the exercise as a mere “jamboree.”
According to Ohuabunwa, the faction had met and resolved to obey all court decisions relating to the disputed convention. He stressed that the group would not recognize the Ibadan event and accused some party actors of violating the PDP constitution.

Acting National Chairman of the faction, Abdulrahman Muhammad, also urged delegates nationwide to boycott the gathering, promising continued mobilization to rebuild what he described as a stronger and more united PDP.

Meanwhile, Nyesom Wike, addressing members of his camp, praised them for standing firm in defence of the party in their respective states. He reiterated his commitment to the rule of law and vowed never to betray those who trust in his leadership.

“I will continue to support you. I won’t betray you,” Wike assured his supporters.

The development marks one of the most dramatic internal shake-ups in the PDP’s recent history, signalling deeper cracks within the opposition party ahead of future political contests.
