Lookman seals €40m move to Atletico Madrid

Ademola Lookman has completed a transfer to Atletico Madrid from Atalanta, with the Spanish club confirming the signing on Monday, just hours before the close of the 2026 winter transfer window.

According to Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Atletico paid a €35 million fixed fee plus €5 million in add-ons for the 28-year-old winger. The deal makes Lookman the second-most expensive Nigerian footballer of all time, behind Victor Osimhen, whose transfers to Napoli and Galatasaray exceeded €70 million.

Lookman has signed a four-and-a-half-year contract with the Rojiblancos and will remain at the Wanda Metropolitano until June 2030.

The Super Eagles forward arrived in Madrid on Sunday to complete his medicals, ending weeks of speculation that had also linked him with a move to Turkish side Fenerbahce.

His exit from Atalanta follows a turbulent period in Bergamo. Despite inspiring the club to a Europa League title with a historic hat-trick in the final, Lookman fell out with the club’s hierarchy amid transfer disputes.

In August 2025, he deleted all Atalanta-related posts from his Instagram account in a bid to force a move. The club rejected an earlier offer of €42 million plus €3 million in add-ons from Inter Milan, insisting on a €60 million valuation, even though Lookman had reportedly agreed personal terms with the Nerazzurri.

The standoff saw Lookman refuse to resume pre-season training until mid-September, before Atalanta eventually sanctioned his move to Atletico Madrid.
