Desmond Elliot apologises to Gbajabiamila over Obasa impeachment saga

Lawmaker representing Surulere Constituency I in the Lagos State House of Assembly, Desmond Elliot, has apologised to Femi Gbajabiamila over the political crisis that rocked the Lagos Assembly following the impeachment of Speaker Mudashiru Obasa.

Speaking during an appearance on TVC’s Let’s Talk programme on Friday, Elliot described Gbajabiamila as his political mentor and pleaded for forgiveness over any perceived role he may have played during the controversial leadership battle in the assembly.

“I’m sorry, my daddy, if I have offended you in any way,” Elliot said, adding that he learnt politics under Gbajabiamila’s guidance and still holds deep respect for him.

The actor-turned-politician also apologised to party leaders and Surulere stakeholders, insisting that his loyalty to the APC and his constituency remains intact.

Reacting to allegations that he masterminded the failed impeachment of Obasa in January 2025, Elliot denied any involvement, revealing that he was in South Africa for a family wedding when the incident occurred.

According to him, many lawmakers at the time believed the move had the backing of the presidency, which influenced their actions during the crisis.

“I was shocked when I heard I was being accused as the mastermind. I wasn’t even in the country when it happened,” he said.

Elliot maintained that he would not publicly attack anyone involved in the matter, stressing that he had served under Obasa for over a decade and preferred reconciliation over further political tension.

The Lagos Assembly crisis began after Obasa was impeached by a majority of lawmakers over allegations of misconduct and abuse of office. His deputy, Mojisola Meranda, briefly emerged as the first female speaker of the assembly before stepping down weeks later, paving the way for Obasa’s reinstatement following reported intervention by President Bola Tinubu.
